NBDC modeling workshop 9-13 May, IMWI Addis
Reflection workshop is: 4-6 May – starting discussions on spatial issues on Friday 6th
Optional field trip to Jeldu: 7 May - FULL
Preparing your machine/software: 8 May
Modeling workshop: 9-13 May
The initial aim of this workshop was to bring together the N4 project modeling team to discuss and work on the technical challenges and cross-cutting issues. As NBDC partners and other ‘N’ team members requested to join we have broadened the scope. We will all work together on the 9th but for logistical reasons we have to limit the group size for the hands-on modeling work. Therefore the group is split so that the partners travelling from outside and the main hydrological modeling team will work together 10th-11th and we will offer the option for resident IWMI and ILRI staff to join an additional training on the 12th or 13th.

Not everyone would necessarily need/want to attend all sessions, so some activities could continue for longer / run consecutively if that seems appropriate at the time. We have a couple of offices we can use for breakout rooms.
We will allow some flexibility to move timing and sessions around as we see the need:
Fri 6th Nile Project team meetings start on Friday
Afternoon: spatial modeling/targeting issues relevant to N3 and N4
Sat 7th LIMITED GROUP: (full already)
Field trip to Jeldu site (leave 7.30/8 back 6ish)
Sun 8th free/preparing your machine/downloading software
Mon 9th WHOLE GROUP:
The aim of this day is to consider the different modeling components of N4 and how they fit together. We will have a presentation followed by questions and clarification, then move on to the next aspect. During the morning we will identify key issues and focus on these in the afternoon.
9-10.00 Overview of SWAT modeling at different scales – Dan and Tammo
10-10.45 Intro to productivity modeling issues and data requirements/outputs (crops and livestock) Teklu/Amare to indicate how to incorporate the productivity
10.45-11.45 Intro to / inputs to ECOSAUT/optimization modeling Nancy/Kinde to ‘present’ ECOSAUT approach
11.45-12.15 Intro to SWIM work at PIK - Julia/Yilun
12.15-12.30 Clarify key issues for afternoon discussion.
12.30-1.30 lunch
1.30-4.30 open format discussion – flexible: we can split into smaller groups or continue from morning.
Tues 10th GROUP 1:
9-12.30 SWAT training – short training on simple catchment model using SWAT – Dan
1.30-5.00 Simple catchment models using R – Dan
Wed 11th GROUP 1:
WEAP introduction - We can look at the Nile WEAP lead by Matthew, but in the case that we get someone from SEI we can also spend more time and have an actual training

Thurs 12th N2 – N4 modelers only:
SWAT cont.
Dan will introduce the SWAT-WBmodifications’ and we will work on ‘new’ Nile SWAT together; we need to start on how to incorporate RMS; and Birhanu suggests we build one sub-catchment model using SWAT/SWAT WB. If we are short on time we stick to SWAT-WB.
Fri 13th GROUP 2: If enough demand Dan will do one more SWAT / R training day
We may switch Thursday and Friday around.
We will set up the meeting room with 3 workstations but everyone is required to bring their own laptop. If you want to work on the models directly and save the results you will need to ensure you have sufficient capacity. We could set aside time to download programs/license codes to machines on Sunday – WE CANNOT WASTE WORKSHOP TIME ON THIS.
